Spencer Matthews sets record straight about hospital stay after overdose rumours

Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews has dispelled reports that he was hospitalised after suffering from an overdose. He has been forced to tackle the rumours after a joke he made was taken literally.

The TV star made a joke about "overdosing on cold sore" medicine on his podcast My Therapist Ghosted Me. But despite the ridiculousness of the joke, it seems that some media outlets believed it was true.

It forced Matthews to take to Instagram to tell fans the real reason he had been hospitalised. It turned out he had suffered from a virus.

Taking to the social media site, he said: "As rock and roll as overdosing on cold sore meds sounds, that was not my cause of death (Portsmouth News)… I’m afraid it was only a lowly virus that had me admitted to hospital. Sorry to dampen all the media fun.

"Glad to see that jokes on My Therapist Ghosted Me are considered factual and newsworthy though… Your thoughts needn’t be with my family."

Fans of Matthews were quick to comment on his post and offer their own jokes about how he handled the news. Rick Parfitt Jr (rickparfittjnr) suggested he should make his own rock and roll news story. He said: "There are def more rock n roll ways to go! Glad you are ok brother! Now get that TV thrown out of the hospital window!"

Other fans questioned how anyone would believe someone could become ill of cold sore medicine. Joanna Lewis (j0annalewis) said: "Probs being a little ignorant but enlighten me - how can you overdose on cold sore treatment?" While, Louisa McDonald (louisamcdonaldplease) joked: "I’m waiting for a Zovirax campaign to come in."
