Spain vs Portugal: Cristiano Ronaldo's insane sprint at 2018 World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed his finest individual World Cup campaign to date in 2018.

Portugal may have crashed out of the tournament in the last-16 when they were beaten 2-1 by Uruguay, but Ronaldo still managed to bag four goals in as many appearances.

Three of the Manchester United superstar’s goals came in the memorable 3-3 group stage draw with Spain, the third on the night a trademark knuckleball free-kick that flew past a helpless David De Gea.

It was a bona fide World Cup classic between two of the biggest footballing nations on the planet and Ronaldo was unplayable for the most part.

And his performance was about far more than just the goals. He linked the play brilliantly and produced some dribbles worthy of a young CR7.

Ronaldo also set a 2018 World Cup record during the hugely entertaining affair.

Despite being 33 years of age at the time, the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward clocked the fastest sprint of any player at the tournament.

As reported by the Mirror, Ronaldo registered a top speed of 34 km/h, which was faster than the likes of Kyle Walker and Raheem Sterling.

Kylian Mbappe somehow didn’t even make the top 20…

At one point in the match against Spain, Ronaldo sprinted from his own penalty area to the other like a man possessed and it truly was something to behold.

You can check out a video of his record-breaking run below, although the 40 km/h in the title is, of course, not correct.

The man is an absolute machine, isn’t he?

To be able to fly past fellow professionals at an age where most mortals are slowing down further highlights how ridiculously committed to the sport Ronaldo is.

Even now at the age of 37, he’s still as fit as a fiddle and managed to finish third in the 2021/22 Premier League
