Spain’s Euro 2008 winners celebrating behind Bastian Schweinsteiger after final was brutal

Euro 2008 was a classic tournament to say the least, with Spain beating Germany to start the nation’s dominant period in world football which will take some matching let alone beating.

They went on to win the World Cup just two years later, before defending their Euros title in 2012, with no nation able to touch them, they were simply breathtaking to watch.

Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso and Carles Puyol were amongst some of the big names in the side, with almost every player world beaters.

Two heavyweights on international football went toe-to-toe in the final, with Germany and Spain making it to the title match in Vienna after impressive tournaments up until that point.

A goal in the first half was enough to settle the game, with Torres’ goal seeing the trophy return to Spain, with Germany suffering excruciating heartbreak.

David Villa finished as the top scorer for the tournament with Xavi taking the Player of the Tournament accolade, showing us just how dominant this Spain side were throughout.

Losing any final will be one of the lowest points in any athletes career, let alone such a major tournament with your national team, so the post-match interviews from the German players will have been some of the hardest they’ll have had to do.

However, Bastian Schweinsteiger was dealt absolute chaos during one of his interviews, with the pain of the defeat surely compounded with the Spanish players celebrating around him making plenty of noise.

Reflecting on the game was made much harder for Schweinsteiger, with the Spanish team not showing any respect to him after such a great battle, there’s nothing worse than not being gracious in victory.
