Southgate considering Jacob Ramsey for England call-up next month

Jacob Ramsey is on the radar of England boss Gareth Southgate after his stunning recent form for Aston Villa.

The midfielder scored twice in Wednesday's thrilling 3-3 draw with Leeds at Villa Park, prompting manager Steven Gerrard - a former England skipper who won 114 caps - to tip him for full international honours.

And it is understood Ramsey, 20, is now firmly in contention for a place in Southgate's squad for next month's friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast, as England step up their preparations for the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.

'I want Jacob to make headlines with his own football,' said Gerrard. 'He is loving every moment and getting stronger and better every game.

'His performance and finishes against Leeds were wonderful and he is the type of midfielder we want.

'He is in a great place and credit to him. I am sure people will be watching him and I know the level of the England players.

'I have been around it and have enough experience to know it is only a matter of time, but let's all be sensible.'

Ramsey became a first-team regular at Villa only this season but has already registered five goals and one assist in the league and developed an immediate understanding with Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho, on loan from Barcelona, set up both Ramsey's goals against Leeds, and the pair scored and assisted in the 2-2 draw with Manchester United last month. Villa travel to Newcastle on Saturday.
