Southampton: Ralph Hasenhuttl still facing 'crazy' problem at St. Mary's
Southampton‘s defeat against Chelsea on Saturday was a “crazy” result, according to ex-Saints midfielder Carlton Palmer.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side suffered their heaviest loss of the campaign as the European champions ran riot at St Mary’s Stadium, eventually running out 6-0 winners.
Southampton went into the game hoping to end their four-match winless run in the Premier League, but their miserable form only ended up going from bad to worse.
From the moment Marcus Alonso hammered the Blues into an early lead, it seemed like it was going to be a long afternoon for the South Coast outfit, and that proved to be the case.
Just eight minutes later, Mason Mount doubled Chelsea’s advantage from distance before Timo Werner continued his excellent record against Southampton by rounding Fraser Forster to make it 3-0 after just 21 minutes.
There was still time for Kai Havertz to make it 4-0 before half-time after he followed up Werner’s effort that crashed against the post.
Ibrahima Diallo was introduced at the break, but nothing could stop a rampant Chelsea, who scored twice early on in the second period via Werner and Mount to complete a comprehensive victory.
Fortunately for Southampton, they wouldn’t suffer a third 9-0 defeat in as many seasons, but it was another dark day for Hasenhuttl and co.
He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s crazy, it seems to happen every season. They get one or two games where they get beaten heavily, it’s just crazy.”
