Southampton ‘pushing’ to complete huge deadline day deal at St Mary’s

Southampton are now ‘pushing’ to complete a deal for PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo before the summer transfer window shuts at 11pm, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has overseen a busy few months of business at St Mary’s but could still strengthen in the final hours before the cut-off.

According to journalist Adam Blackmore, Southampton have now agreed a transfer fee with PSV for Gakpo and come to a consensus on personal terms.

He adds that it is now down to PSV to decide whether to confirm the sale or not ahead of the deadline.

It comes after Southampton had seen a £21 million offer for the Netherlands international rejected, with the Eredivisie side holding out for £38 million.

Everton and Leeds United are also interested in signing Gakpo this summer, while Manchester United were also heavily linked prior to completing the signing of Antony.

If he were to arrive on the south coast, the 23-year-old would become their sixth signing of the summer, following the likes of Gavin Bazunu, Sekou Mara and Romeo Lavia into the club.

Crook understands that Southampton are now pushing to get the deal completed before the end of the transfer window.

The talkSPORT reporter adds that, if they can seal an agreement, it would top off an excellent summer of business for the Saints.

Crook told GIVEMESPORT: “Gakpo, they’re pushing. That’s one they’re certainly trying to get over the line and the one the fans are most excited about and, if they get that done, they’ve had a brilliant window.”

This would be a seriously exciting piece of business for the club and one that could make them a lot of money in a few years’ time too.

Gakpo is only 23 but has already shown his class, bagging 46 goals in 143 games for PSV
