Southampton drawn to face Exeter City in Papa John's Trophy

Exeter City will face Premier League side Southampton in the group stage of the 2022/23 Papa John's Trophy. The Saints drawn alongside Exeter's newly-promoted rivals Forest Green Rovers as well as Newport County in Group E on Thursday morning.

All EFL clubs will play two of their three matches at home in the group stages. The opening ties are provisionally set to take place in the week commencing August 29.

Southampton’s U21s crashed out in the group stages of the competition last year. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men have never reached the knockout stages, although the senior team claimed the title in 2010.

City reached round two of the competition last season before being beaten 3-2 by Portsmouth, despite leading 2-1 going into stoppage time. The same fate had befallen Matt Taylor’s men in the semi-final of the competition in 2020.

The Grecians drew both games with the Green Devils 0-0 last season, as Rovers pipped City to the title on goal difference. They previously met in the competition in 2020/21, when Exeter came from behind to win 3-2, with Josh Key scoring the winner.

The Exiles finished 11 th in League Two last season, drawing 2-2 at St James Park, before Tim Dieng scored the winner at Rodney Parade in April for City. The two sides last met in the competition in 2019/20, when Matt Jay scored twice in a 2-0 win for City.
