Southampton: Bednarek future claim emerges after weekend absence

Southampton defender Jan Bednarek is likely to stay at the club beyond this season, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

Bednarek has been at St Mary’s since 2017, and Barclay does not expect him to move on any time soon, despite the centre-back being linked with a transfer to Serie A.

The 25-year-old has been a regular in Southampton’s back line this term, making 24 top-flight appearances and chipping in with three goals, although he did miss the side’s FA Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

His performances have caught the eye of Italian side Napoli, who are reportedly interested in signing Bednarek, while they are also monitoring the progress of his teammate Mohammed Salisu.

Napoli have already signed one defender from England in recent months as they brought in Axel Tuanzebe from Manchester United back in January, and they could make a move for Bednarek this summer if they opt to step up their interest.

Barclay believes Bednarek has been less consistent than Salisu this season, but he still thinks the Polish international is a useful asset for Southampton, and he has backed the Saints to fend off interest from rival clubs for his services.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Barclay said: “Perhaps Bednarek is a little bit more up and down, but I still think he’s an excellent squad player. Yes, if they want to go to the next level, having a player of the potential and quality of Salisu next to Salisu would really help, but it’s hard to find them.
