South of Scotland League title decider between Creetown and Dalbeattie Star postponed due to burst pipe

A burst pipe meant Saturday’s Utility Hut South of Scotland League title decider had to be postponed.

Creetown were due to host Dalbeattie Star at Castle Cary Park, just 48 hours after the sides had met there in the Haig Gordon Cup.

With league leaders Creetown a point clear of Star, who have two games in hand, it was set to be a huge clash – only for plumbing problems to put paid to those plans.

Creetown gaffer, Jamie Adams, said: “The pitch was a mess and then someone went in on Friday morning there were burst pipes and a foot of water.

“It should be able to get fixed and if the weather stays OK the pitch should be fine.

Thursday was touch and go and the park was a mess on Friday.”

Star boss Eddie Warwick added: “It is what it is. It’s unfortunate having a building waterlogged, I hope they can get it sorted and aren’t too much out of pocket.

“Hopefully their facility is open and clear soon and they can move on.”

Thursday’s meeting between the sides had to be decided on penalties.

Russell Williamson had headed Star into the lead but Josh Rennie bagged a late equaliser to force extra-time.

And with no further goals, it was Creetown who progressed after a 4-2 triumph in the penalty shootout.

Adams said: “You have to give everything to get to a final. I told the boys we had to play two finals to win it – one against Dalbeattie and the other being against Newton if we got through.

“It was brilliant for the boys on that side as I thought we fully deserved to win in 90 minutes.

“Dalbeattie are a really good team, they’ve shown that this year, they’ve got a great squad with a great starting 11 but I thought our boys were brilliant for 90 minutes.
