Sources - Padres acquire Ryan O'Hearn, Ramon Laureano from Orioles - ESPN
The San Diego Padres are finalizing a deal to acquire first baseman Ryan O'Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Thursday.
O'Hearn, selected to his first All-Star Game as a starter this season, punishes right-handed pitching and is having an out-of-nowhere career year, hitting .283 — and with the underlying metrics to support that, despite his career .250 batting average over eight seasons with the O's and Kansas City Royals.
He has cooled of late, however, hitting just .224 since the end of May.
With 13 home runs to this point, O'Hearn is already within two of matching his career high in that category. He also has 43 RBIs and has shown more patience at the plate, with his 42 walks also close to his career high (46).
O'Hearn, 32, doesn't face lefty pitchers much at all, and his splits suggest that he shouldn't. He also provides lineup versatility, as he can serve as the strong side of a first-base platoon and pick up outfield and DH at-bats.
Laureano leads the Orioles with 15 home runs this season. The outfielder, who is hitting a career-best .290 and has 46 RBIs, is expected to become the Padres' new starting left fielder.
Laureano, 31, is a .252 hitter in his eight-year MLB career with 97 home runs and 298 RBIs.
