Source: Chargers sign TE Patrick Herbert, brother of starting QB - ESPN

LOS ANGELES — The Chargers signed tight end Patrick Herbert to their practice squad, a source told NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. Patrick will reunite with his brother, quarterback Justin Herbert, making them teammates for the first time since college.

It's the first time the Herberts have been teammates since 2019, when they were both at Oregon. Back then, they didn't spend much time on the field together.

Patrick, then a freshman, played just two games while Justin cemented himself as one of college football's best quarterbacks during his senior year, throwing for 3,471 yards, 32 touchdowns and five interceptions. The Chargers selected Justin with the sixth pick in the 2020 draft.

Patrick played in 41 games over three seasons at Oregon, where he mainly served as a blocking tight end. He finished his career with 31 catches for 388 yards and four touchdowns.

He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season as an undrafted free agent. He spent the season there on the practice squad. He was elevated for the Jaguars' season finale against the Tennessee Titans but was a healthy scratch.

Patrick will provide blocking depth for this offense behind tight ends David Njoku, Charlie Kolar, Oronde Gadsden and Scott Matlock.

The brothers got their first taste of being on opposite sidelines in the NFL last season when the Chargers played the Jaguars in Week 11, a 35-6 blowout in favor of Jacksonville.

Justin, 28, is 2½ years older than Patrick, who will turn 26 in October.
