Souness slams a squad of Man Utd imposters ahead of ‘monumental task’ for Ten Hag

Grame Souness claims Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea are the only Manchester United players who can hold their heads up high after a dire season for the Red Devils.

United have failed to win a trophy for a fifth successive year and will miss out on Champions League football next season having failed to finish in the top four.

They fell to a 4-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday, which interim boss Ralf Rangnick described as “humiliating”, meaning they will end the season with their lowest ever Premier League points tally.

And Souness said he is “struggling to find anyone that you would say are anything like a Man United player” other than Ronaldo and De Gea, the standout performers this season.

Souness said: “You’d like to think you’ll get honesty from the players.

“You’ll like to think the players are playing for their futures at that club because there must be question marks over so many of them. So many have underperformed, we know they’re better. But it’s okay us saying that, but they have to go out and do it.

“Near enough to a man, Ronaldo’s chipped in with goals and the goalkeeper [De Gea], maybe. Other than that, you’re struggling to find anyone that you would say are anything like a Man United player.”

Erik ten Hag will take the Old Traford helm at the end of the season, with rumours of overhauls rife, and Souness insists the Dutch manager is faced with a “monumental task” to get United into a position to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City.
