Smoke seen for miles as fire crews tackle blaze in Stockport

Smoke has been seen miles away this evening as crews tackled a car that went up in flames in Stockport. A huge cloud of smoke could be seen billowing above the borough more than 20 miles away in the Peak District shortly before 4:30pm this evening.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said at the time they were responding after a car went up in flames in a residential garage in Cheadle Hulme.

Three fire engines and gas and electricity experts attended the scene on Ravenoak Road. Crews donned breathing apparatus to extinguish the blaze.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: "Shortly after 4.15pm this afternoon (Tuesday, 28 May), three fire engines from Offerton, Stockport and Whitehill fire stations were called to attend a vehicle fire in a garage on Ravenoak Road, Stockport.

“Crews arrived quickly and are using four breathing apparatus, a thermal imaging camera and positive pressure ventilation to extinguish the fire.

“Firefighters are working alongside Cadent Gas and Electricity North West to make the area safe and remain in attendance at this time.”

Will Norvick, a Liberal Demorcrat councillor in East Cambridgeshire, was among those to post about the 'massive' fire on social media saying the smoke could be seen from Kinder Downfall in the High Peak more than 20 miles away.
