Manchester United players must walk past journalists to leave Wembley Stadium and the best interactions with squad members are often produced in the mixed zone.

Once a game is finished, journalists have a choice between attending the press conference or the mixed zone, but the MEN send two reporters to cover United matches.

Having two dedicated reporters at a game means nothing is missed and I was present in the mixed zone on Saturday after United lost in the Community Shield on penalties.

Asking each player if they'd be kind enough to spare a minute to chat can be a thankless task, especially after a defeat, and nobody was willing to speak as they darted for the team bus at Wembley, but most of the squad had the decency to politely decline the request.

There are some players in the United dressing room - and at every other Premier League club - who choose to blank journalists as they walk through the mixed zone, which is obviously their prerogative, but having the decency to politely say 'not today' is always appreciated.

Journalists don't look for sympathy when they are ignored in the mixed zone - it's part of the job and that's not what this article is about - but politely declining goes a long way.

Christian Eriksen and Harry Amass were the first to walk through the mixed zone after the Community Shield and both had the courtesy to decline a request to speak.
