Sir Jim Ratcliffe can't break any of his four promises after Manchester United takeover

Manchester United fans will be waking up this morning to the first full day of the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era.

The INEOS founder completed his 25 per cent acquisition of the Reds on Tuesday night after receiving ratification from the Premier League. This concludes the long wait for Ratcliffe to officially arrive at United following the Christmas Eve announcement regarding the reaching of a deal with the Glazers.

Attention will now turn to what is to come for United under Ratcliffe and the British billionaire has already set his stall out in his first words after the deal was confirmed. MEN Sport has given its view on the key talking points below.

In a statement, Ratcliffe said on Tuesday: "To become co-owner of Manchester United is a great honour and comes with great responsibility. This marks the completion of the transaction, but just the beginning of our journey to take Manchester United back to the top of English, European and world football, with world-class facilities for our fans.

"Work to achieve those objectives will accelerate from today."

What MEN Sport says: Ratcliffe really cannot afford to break any of the four promises set out in his statement. After a decade in the wilderness, it is high time United returned to prominence not only on the domestic stage but in European and world football.

We must remember that the journey to return United to their former glory will take time and Ratcliffe can only do so much in the few months before the end of the season. But he is making the right noises with the appointment of Omar Berrada and pursuit of Dan Ashworth.
