Sir Alex Ferguson would have left Jadon Sancho in no doubt given strict Manchester United stance

Jadon Sancho and Erik Ten Hag have had a week to sort out the scenario that played out in public last Sunday.

Sancho and Ten Hag will surely have spoken, but the player's social media actions have cornered him into one final chance at United. It’s easy to forget what life was like before the emergence of social media platforms. Bebo and MSN paved the way for X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to flourish and flounder in equal measure, especially when it comes to sport. Instant reactions, overflowing praise and vile vitriol have made a massive impact on the modern game.

It allows footballers to connect with fans on a much more intimate level than ever before. It gives athletes a voice, no longer hamstrung to toe the club line if they decide they have something to say.

That in itself has got to be a positive. But social media can also be the stage that contains a self-inflicted trap door - speak out in error or emotion and your post is screenshotted and shared faster than it can be deleted.

Not that Sancho doesn’t stand by his words. Ten Hag certainly stands by his, as revealed by MEN Sport. But after his public declaration of defiance, perhaps the best next step for Sancho is to heed the advice of United icon Sir Alex Ferguson.

His stance on social media, a medium that was not even an idea at the start of his tenure but was a prevalent tool towards the end of it, is one Ten Hag yet may take too.
