Most Manchester United fans won't be happy about the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, and neither will Sir Alex Ferguson.

The legendary Scot labelled the pair United's "heart and soul" last year following their respective explosions onto the first team scene. However, unrest appears to be growing, particularly since head coach Ruben Amorim took the helm in November, and both players are now linked with an Old Trafford exit.

Garnacho, 20, has struggled for game-time since his surprise omission ahead of the Manchester derby in December and is understood to be considering his options. Meanwhile, contract talks between Mainoo and United have stalled, potentially opening the door for a shock departure.

Should either man leave this month, it will, presumably, be much to Ferguson's chagrin judging by comments he made about the pair just weeks after they both scored in United's surprise FA Cup final win over Manchester City. "[They are] the heart and soul of what Manchester United has been since the days of Sir Matt Busby, who started the whole process of trusting young players playing," the 83-year-old told TikTok star Jamal Niaz in July.

"They're young. What they're showing at the moment, the composure and confidence to play in the first-team, and not be daunted by it. In a way, it shows you the kind of courage they have. It's a distinction in human beings, some have the will to be that [fearless at a young age]."
