Sir Alex Ferguson reveals illuminating Rangers trait that defined him as McCoist explains what he 'didn't appreciate'

Legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the necessity to win with Rangers sparked a winning trait which turbo-charged a managerial career without compare.

The 82-year-old spent two years as a player at Ibrox, however, he insists their blueprint on winning is marked across his storied 39 years in the dugout, which included highs including leading Aberdeen to Cup Winners' Cup glory in 1983 and lifting the Champions League on two occasions with Manchester United.

And Ferguson – who played for Rangers between 1967 and 1969 – is adamant the way of Ibrox life set in motion a need to never to accept second best. Sitting down with Ally McCoist for TNT Sports, he said: "When I was a player here at Rangers, and I left under a cloud a bit, do you know what I got out of it, and never left me my whole life? Expectation, everywhere I went, expectation, creating an expectation. For the players, fans, your job is to get footballers who send fans home happy."

McCoist responded: "It's amazing that, and just to back that up I was lucky enough to play for Rangers for 15 years, and I didn't appreciate the expectation until I went somewhere else and tried to get those expectation levels up wherever you go after that. It's an amazing thing, expectations."
