How much hiring Ruben Amorim to replace Erik ten Hag is really costing Man United

Manchester United’s decision to sack manager Erik ten Hag will cost them in the region of £13-15million, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

The club released a statement on Monday confirming that Ten Hag has left his role as first team manager, and Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken charge as interim while a permanent replacement is recruited. The Manchester Evening News reported on Wednesday that the club have agreed a fee with Portuguese side Sporting CP for Ruben Amorim, and they are now working on a deal to bring his first team coaches to Old Trafford.

Amorim will become United’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ten Hag all attempted to fill the shoes of the Scot on a permanent basis, but none of those appointments lasted more than three years.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Price of Football Podcast, finance expert Maguire outlined just how much United have spent in compensation fees since 2013, and how much Ten Hag’s sacking, along with Amorim’s expected appointment, will cost them overall.

Maguire said: “If we take a look at the Manchester United accounts since Sir Alex Ferguson left, since 2013 and June 30 2024, they’ve spent a grand total of £71million in compensation for loss of office.

“Erik ten Hag is getting somewhere in the region of £13-15million. On top of that, it’s going to cost Manchester United, if we presume they will recruit [Ruben] Amorim, a further £6.5million to
