Sir Alex Ferguson issued 'brutal advice' to Chris Armas after Manchester United appointment

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly issued some harsh advice to outgoing assistant manager Chris Armas, less than a week after he arrived at Old Trafford.

Armas was appointed as Ralf Rangnick's assistant following United's decision to turn to the experienced German, and it was hoped that he would be able to bring fresh ideas to help reignite the club's season. However, Armas, working in tandem with Rangnick, failed to deliver, with Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace only just securing the club a Europa League spot for next season.

Armas arrived at Old Trafford following coaching spells at New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, meaning his role at United marked the biggest of his career to date. And, according to a report by The Athletic, he soon met with Ferguson, with the two chatting following United's 1-1 draw with Young Boys in the Champions League back in December.

It is claimed that Armas, 49, showed Ferguson his CV and the legendary Scot is alleged to have brutally replied something along the lines of: "You'll need more than that here, son."

Following Erik ten Hag's appointment as United boss, it is unlikely that Armas will remain at Old Trafford this summer. Mitchell van der Gaag is poised to follow Ten Hag to Old Trafford and continue as his assistant.

Ten Hag was in the stands at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon, soaking up his first opportunity to watch United live following his appointment. He left Ajax last weekend after leading them to their third Eredivisie title of his tenure, meaning he will be aiming to replicate that success at Old Trafford.
