Simon Jordan claims Birmingham City boss Lee Bowyer 'picked the wrong horse'

Simon Jordan believes Lee Bowyer "picked the wrong horse" when he walked out on Charlton Athletic for Birmingham City.

Bowyer decided to leave Charlton for Blues almost a year ago and saved the club from relegation to League One in the final weeks of the campaign.

Blues are 18th in the Championship in Bowyer's first full season in charge, but they sit 13 points above the dreaded drop zone this time around.

Meanwhile, Charlton - now under the management of Bowyer's former assistant at The Valley, Johnnie Jackson - are sitting in 11th position in League One.

But former Crystal Palace owner Jordan believes Bowyer made a mistake in March 2021 when he decided to take the Blues job.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan said: "We questioned it a year ago and Lee was very unoffended by my questioning of his ambition, to leave a club (Charlton) that had a new owner coming in who had bags of ambition and money to go to a football club that looked like a busted flush.

"Birmingham are in a similar position to when he came in. They are 18th right now, they have the conundrum of the fans being off side completely against the ownership there.

"He's picked, for me, the wrong horse. Whether it's because he played there and wanted to go back and manage, because Birmingham's a big club.

"But I maintain the fact that he has jumped from the frying pan... into the fire."

Despite Blues only recording one win in their last 11 games, stretching back to November, Bowyer still has supporters on side.

The anger of those on the terraces is instead being directed at owners Birmingham Sports Holdings Limited (BSHL), and protests have been held at recent matches.

Jordan added: "Lee is a proper football guy in that he has the courage of his convictions.
