Shoppers call for boycott of popular Christmas chocolates as 'shrinkflation' strikes again

Supermarket shoppers are up in arms as a popular Christmas treat has gone up in price and shrunk in size – and not for the first time.

Chocolate selection box Celebrations are a regular feature of British Christmases – but a 550g tub will now set you back up to £6, depending on where you shop.

Glenn Kennedy from Manchester runs a Facebook page where members post and discuss the latest and greatest supermarket deals, What's the Jam reported.

With Christmas 100 days away, Kennedy reposted an image from a Lee Myers, which appeared to show how much the chocolate box had shrunk in size over the years.

An image shows three tubs on a kitchen table with a significant reduction in size between them. “The size difference is mental. Twice the price for half the amount,” wrote Myers.

Commenters were united in their disapproval. Others urged their fellow shoppers to stop buying them as an act of protest.

“If everyone boycotted and refused to buy them they’d either give them away or throw them away ..while there’s demand there will always be a supply… I refused to be ripped off anymore,” wrote Patricia Fenn.

“Boycott them and don’t buy, then they’ll be giving them away in January,” wrote another commenter.

Celebrations were first launched by Mars Wrigley back in 1997 – but the changes they have undergone over the past few years have not gone unnoticed.

The tins shrunk by 38pc between 2008 and 2023, reported Metro.co.uk and The Sun last year. This means that in just 15 years, the Christmas staple has gone from 975g to 600g.
