Shels shock league leaders Derry at the Brandywell

Shelbourne secured a massive victory to shock leaders Derry City, at a packed Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

Trailing to James Akintunde goal, the Dubliners bounced back in the second half to inflict the Candy Stripes' first defeat of the season, thanks to goals from Shane Farrell and Brian McManus.

City started on the front foot and there first effort came on four minutes, but a diving Brendan Clarke did well to save Brandon Kanavagh's long range strike.

A clever pass by Will Patching on 32 minutes found Akintunde inside the box, the striker controlled the ball before showing good strength and fired home on the turn past Clarke.

Derry front man Jamie McGonigle went close on two separate occasions, but on both times the Shels net-minder Clarke denied him.

At half-time Shels' Alan Quinn was shown a straight red card from referee Rob Hennessy, as the coach took his protests too far, as the officials were walking off the pitch.

Shels went close to levelling things on 51 minutes but Dan Carr's shot, from just inside the box, which had Gartside scrambling, whistled just past the right hand post.

A quick counter attack by the visitors ended with Ledwidge feeding Shane Farrell down the left and the striker made no mistake, drilling the ball back across Gartside, into the bottom corner.

Derry thought they had regained the lead minutes later but McJannet's powerful header was challked off, as the referee assistant had his flag up signally that the ball had gone out of play.

Shels captialised on that let-off as they took the lead on 73 as substitute Brian McManus was given too much space and time on the edge of the box, the midfielder made no mistake firing home.
