Sheffield Wednesday’s Lee Gregory wins April League One award but Darren Moore misses out

Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory has been named as League One Player of the Month for April after seven goals in seven games helped his side into the play-offs.

The 33-year-old scored nearly half of his 16-goal tally in the month - including a hattrick in the 3-2 win at Fleetwood Town - before bagging another in the second-leg of the play-off semi-final defeat to Sunderland on Monday.

Gregory beat Sunderland forward Nathan Broadhead, Wigan Athletic's Will Keane and Milton Keynes Dons star Scott Twine to the award.

His hattrick will remain the highlight of the campaign, striking his third beautifully into the bottom corner just a minute after his second.

Owls boss Darren Moore was also up for the Manager of the Month award following five wins and a draw from seven games, but fell short of winning courtesy of Gareth Ainsworth - whose Wycombe Wanderers were the only side to beat Wednesday in April.

The award will provide no consolation, however, to the heartbreak suffered on Monday night, as Patrick Roberts scored in the third minute of injury-time at Hillsborough to take Sunderland into the play-off final and condemn Wednesday to another season in League One.

Moore was visibly devastated after the second-leg during his media duties.

“They (the players) were gutted," said Moore. "Absolutely gutted. “There was a great belief, you could see that belief and energy in the place. For me to talk and say much now, it doesn’t really carry much weight because you could just feel that disappointment. What you have to do is let that disappointment settle in and go from there. It was really quiet in there. There was so much hope carried.
