Sheffield Wednesday’s George Byers gives heartfelt reflection after League One play-off semi-final loss

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers has posted a heartfelt response to their play-off heartbreak - admitting it will take ‘a while to get over it’. The Owls finished fourth in the regular season to qualify for the League one play-offs, where they met Sunderland in the semi-final.

Lee Gregory scored in the 74th minute of the second-leg at Hillsborough to level the aggregate score at 1-1 and on the way to extra-time, but an injury-time finish from the Black Cats’ Patrick Roberts stole a place at Wembley from the grasp of Darren Moore’s side and kept the Owls in League One for another season.

And after a few days presumably away from social media, Byers admitted it will take a ‘while to get over it’, but thanked Owls fans for another season of outstanding support.

“A lot of emotions after the other night.” Byers tweeted. “Will take me a while to get over it tbh. However the atmosphere was insane and I just want to thank every fan for the continuous support this season. Sorry we couldn’t get there. But a proud feeling to play for this special club #UTO ”

The 25-year-old Scot has been brilliant since signing from Swansea City last summer, featuring 22 times in the league, with six goals and two assists to show for it.

He and the rest of the Owl’s side will no doubt be devastated at missing the chance for a Wembley play-off final, allowed some time to rest and recover before a pre-season. Owl’s boss Moore will have to look to strengthen in the summer as his side once again fight for their place back in the Championship next season.
