Sheffield Wednesday receive transfer boost with reported target set to leave League Two club

Sheffield Wednesday have been heavily linked with a summer move for Jack Tucker. The 22-year-old defender has been offered fresh terms to stay at Gillingham.

Talks are ongoing with Tucker, but Gills boss Neil Harris thinks it is unlikely he will remain at Priestfield next season following their relegation to League Two. "I have been very clear and honest with everybody that he is likely to move on," Harris told the club's website.

"As much as I’d love to have him at the Football Club, realistically, we are not going to keep him even though we have made the contract offer." Harris added that defender Robbie McKenzie has turned down a new contract and will leave the club at the end of his deal.

Tucker was a first-team regular for the Gills last term. He made 50 appearances across all competitions as they finished fourth-from-bottom.

As well as the Owls, Tucker has also been linked with Ipswich Town, Hull City and Scottish Premiership side Hibernian. Portsmouth have previously been credited with an interest in the player while Celtic and Glasgow Rangers have also reportedly had a look at Tucker.

Gillingham would be entitled to compensation should Tucker move on because he is under the age of 24. Tucker has been with the club since the age of seven.

Wednesday are scouring the market in search of centre-backs. They are short on numbers at the back, with Chey Dunkley and Sam Hutchinson to leave the club at the end of their contracts while loan players Harlee Dean, Jordan Storey and Lewis Gibson have headed back to their parent clubs.
