Sheffield Wednesday 'interested in' Birmingham City-linked attacker

Sheffield Wednesday are interested in Birmingham City-linked attacker Mallik Wilks. That’s according to the Sheffield Star who claim the Owls are ‘exploring the possibility’ of signing the forward despite the fact he still has another year left on his contract at Hull City.

Indeed the 23-year-old seemed to be on his way out of the MKM Stadium having barely been used by Shota Arveladze during the second half of the season and with his deal running down. However, the Tigers triggered their option and the Leeds-born talent remains under contract until 2023.

Wilks had a subpar campaign last time out, playing just six minutes of Championship football in 2022 and not even making Arveladze’s match day squads. Prior to that, though, he was a key player in the team which won promotion from League One, with 22 goals in 50 games.

The Star are not clear whether any move for Wilks would be a permanent or loan transfer but they are confident Darren Moore is in the market for a striker, with interest in Rotherham’s Michael Smith and Charlton Athletic’s Jayden Stockley.

As for Blues, their interest was revealed by Football Insider who said they are one of a number of clubs, in this country and overseas, who are 'keeping tabs' on the winger. Wilks started out at Leeds United before moving to Barnsley and then being loaned to Hull City and in the summer of 2020 he signed permanently for the Tigers.

BirminghamLive understands that Wilks' name is on a long list of possible options as they too look at adding some youth to a striking cordon that features Troy Deeney, Scott Hogan and Lukas Jutkiewicz.Versatile Wilks can play on either wing or through the middle.
