Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore has vindicated Dejphon Chansiri's backing

Sheffield Wednesday were a "broken club" when Darren Moore took over as manager a year ago today.

Fan discontent had grown following a chaotic campaign on and off the pitch.

A dreadful late collapse away to Luton Town left the Owls 23rd in the table, six points adrift of safety in the Championship.

Moore's appointment was a closely guarded secret and hastily finalised after Wednesday's timid Luton surrender. He was their third permanent manager of the season.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri stacked all his chips on Moore keeping them in the division.

The battle for survival went down to the wire. Moore returned to the dug-out for the epic final-day shoot-out at Derby County after missing a number of matches after a bout of Covid.

“I was fighting for my life," Moore told The Times. “When I caught Covid, I never felt too great in the two weeks I was isolating.

“When I came back out, I just went all out with energies and driving the team for two days for the game against Swansea.

"It sent me to a difficult place in just a few hours. I had all these pains in my chest. I still thought, 'I'm all right' but my blood was starting to clot.

"It attacked my respiratory system, I had pneumonia and then pleurisy. I was struggling.

“I was in there (hospital) a full week, full 24 hours’ oxygen. I’ve not talked about this and I’ll be honest with you, I was scared. I went through a four-hour period in the emergency room with three cardiac nurses around me."

Moore has admitted since he returned to work earlier than he should have done.

But he was determined to lead the Owls to safety.

His side, though, fell agonisingly short of Championship survival. A thrilling 3-3 draw at the Pride Park Stadium consigned Wednesday to relegation to the third tier
