Sheffield United eyeing Premier League players for promotion push as transfer approach confirmed

Stephen Bettis says Sheffield United will use the Premier League loan market once again to bolster their team for another promotion push next season. Paul Heckingbottom has finalised his squad plans and has presented to the board the areas where he wants to strengthen.

He has identified 'six or seven' positions in his squad that need filling before the 2022-23 campaign gets under way in July. United leaned heavily on this transfer approach last season and brought in numerous players, including Robin Olsen, Conor Hourihane, Ben Davies, Morgan Gibbs-White and Charlie Goode.

The loan market offers United the opportunity to bring in Premier League quality players that they would otherwise be unable to afford on a permanent basis. And Bettis believes what helps give them the edge over other clubs in the division is their already impressive reputation in this field.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live as part of a roundtable discussion with member of the local media, Bettis said: "I think we're pretty much there with the existing squad. We sat down at length with Paul and went through who went and who's staying.

"We've gone through it now and Paul's happy with where we are. We're pretty much there with the current squad, now there's just positions Paul feels need strengthening.

"We will definitely utilise the loan market again. I think we've used it well historically and I think we'll be looking again at Premier League clubs. I think our reputation with a lot of Premier League clubs is that we take their players, look after them, give them opportunities and they're happy here.

"We'll definitely look at the loan market again because that's where we feel you get real quality players who can make a big impact on your team."
