Sheffield United eyeing international starlet but told to stump up six-figure sum

Sheffield United are keeping a close eye on talented young Motherwell defender Max Johnston, according to reports north of the border.

The Daily Record claims the Blades have had the 18-year-old watched regularly in recent weeks and are keen to try and lure him to Bramall Lane.

The report states United could face competition for his signature though, with Luton also said to be tracking his progress.

However, it goes on to suggest that should the Scottish Premiership side be willing to do business, they would be looking at a 'significant six-figure sum'.

Capped by Scotland under 19s, the talented teenager made his Premiership defeat aged 17 and featured twice for the first team during the 2020-21 campaign.

He was loaned out to Scottish Championship side Queen of the South and has featured regularly this season.

His form has seen him twice named in the Scottish PFL's team of the week.

He still has another year of his contract beyond this one, which is why the Steelmen won't allow him to leave on the cheap.

It is understood manager Graham Alexander plans to bring him into the first team fold at Fir Park next season.

Johnston is the son of former Rangers, Hearts and Scotland star Allan and has come through the ranks as a defender, but has also played in midfield this season.

Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom is no stranger to Scottish football having managed Hibernian and the Blades boss recently missed out on Hearts' centre back John Souttar - who has signed a pre-contract deal with Rangers.

United are targeting up and coming young players as part of their change to a self-sustaining development model.
