Share your thoughts on the latest Clean Air Zone update

With Manchester's Clean Air Zone project currently under review, the government has written to mayor Andy Burnham with their view on how the scheme should be implemented.

Environment Secretary George Eustice penned the letter, suggesting that the CAZ should cover just the city centre rather than the whole region.

This would see the area of the scheme reduced by 95 per cent, although Mr Eustice still backed charging the most polluting taxis, vans, buses and lorries.

Mr Burnham has already responded via social media, saying he plans to continue pushing for his plan of a non-charging CAZ based on incentives.

The CAZ was initially meant to kick into action on May 30, with the charges including a £60 fee for buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles, £10 for vans and minibuses and £7.50 for taxis and private hire vehicles.

But the scheme was put on hold in a dramatic u-turn in February following large protests from taxi drivers.

Some readers have already commented on the latest advice from the government to reduce the area of the scheme, with one saying: "This is exactly what many have argued, throughout the many debates on the topic."

Others were still against the CAZ entirely, with another person commenting: "Things like this should be outlawed."
