Shamrock Rovers midfielder Chris McCann departs after two title-winning campaigns
Shamrock Rovers have announced that midfielder Chris McCann has departed after two seasons at the club.
The 35-year-old Dubliner signed for the club in late 2020, winning two Premier Division titles in two seasons at the Tallaght club and emerging as an ever-present in their first ever Europa Conference League campaign in 2022.
"We can confirm that Chris McCann has left the Club following the expiration of his contract," Shamrock Rovers said in a statement.
"Chris departs a back to back League winner after achieving success in both seasons at the Hoops.
"We thank him for his commitment and wish him all the very best in his future career."
The hugely experienced McCann spent the bulk of his early career at Burnley, making 238 appearances for the club and scoring 27 goals, a prominent figure in their rise to the Premier League.
While his Premier League career began well in 2008-09, he was derailed by serious knee injuries in the years that followed. McCann subsequently signed for Wigan Athletic before departing for the MLS and DC United in 2016.
He returned for a spell with Oldham Athletic in 2019-20 before returning to Ireland and Shamrock Rovers at the end of 2020.
He represented Republic of Ireland at U19 level and was called up for U21 duty, though following a falling out with then manager Don Givens, never played at the grade.
