Sergio Gomez hints at Man City position change after pre-season experiments

Sergio Gomez is open to playing in attack for Manchester City as he plots a route into Pep Guardiola's plans this season.

Gomez signed last summer from Anderlecht, where Vincent Kompany had turned him from a right-winger to left-back, and it was in defence where Guardiola used him predominantly in a mixed first year at the Etihad. The Spaniard showed some promise going forward, but often struggled in defence and was overlooked even when Joao Cancelo left in January.

Nathan Ake, Manu Akanji, Rico Lewis and Bernardo Silva were all preferred to Gomez at left-back, so it's perhaps unsurprising that he has not played there in his two pre-season outings so far this summer. Gomez should be fitter than most teammates having represented Spain at the under-21 Euros recently, taking the joint-top scorer award as his country were beaten in the final by England.

In both friendlies in Tokyo over the last week, Gomez has come off the bench to play further forward on the left-wing, while he played off the right for Spain U21. Reflecting on his versatility, he said that he is prepared to join the attack if it means more game-time for City.

“I enjoy it very much,” he said about playing on the wing. “Whenever I play with these team-mates I enjoy it a lot, whether if I play as a winger or as a full back.

“In the national team I am more used to play as a winger, but in both positions I feel comfortable. I always try to help the team no matter what position I am playing whether it is for City or Spain.”
