Sergio Aguero Man City statue: Clip of underwhelming fan turnout goes viral

Exactly a decade on from his legendary last-gasp winner that secured the club their first Premier League title, Manchester City honoured Sergio Aguero with a statue outside the Etihad Stadium on Friday.

The 33-year-old, who called time on his playing career last November due to heart problems, notched 260 goals in 390 games during his 10-year association with City, making him the club’s leading goalscorer of all time.

Aguero also ranks as the most prolific foreign player in Premier League history, finding the net on 184 occasions across 275 appearances in the English top-flight.

The most famous of his strikes, though, is undoubtedly his stoppage-time winner against Queens Park Rangers in the dying moments of the 2011/12 season.

It’s only fitting, then, that Aguero’s statute should immortalise that moment – which ultimately saw City lift the title at the expense of fierce rivals Manchester United.

While the inspiration behind the statue was apt, its execution left much to be desired.

Within minutes of its unveiling, City’s tribute to Aguero was being mocked on social media as fans suggested it looked more like Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos than the Argentine striker.

As if that wasn’t enough, rival fans were quickly presented with more ammunition with which to ridicule City after footage of the attendance for the unveiling of the statue went viral.

Aguero himself made the trip to the Etihad for the ceremony, but footage from the event on Friday morning showed that only a modest number of City fans joined him for the celebration.
