Senior scout sets up Everton pursuit of defender set for premature Leicester exit

Jannik Vestergaard could leave Leicester City after just one season if Everton are successful in an attempt to sign him in the summer, according to a report.

Vestergaard made the move from Southampton to Leicester last summer. He had earned some admirers thanks to his performances on the South Coast. After links with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, he ultimately opted for the move to the King Power Stadium.

But Leicester have not used him as much as he may have expected. So far, he has only started six Premier League matches for the Foxes.

Although he signed a contract until 2024 upon his arrival, Leicester could cut their losses on Vestergaard with a summer sale. It has now emerged that he has at least one potential taker.

According to Football Insider, a senior scout from Everton recently went to watch Vestergaard in action for Denmark. He is one of a number of names that new director of football Kevin Thelwell – who took up his role last month – will consider.

The 29-year-old appeals because of his ability in the air and his Premier League experience. Everton therefore feel he could be the kind of player they are looking for.

After a turbulent season, in which they have been battling against relegation, reinforcements would be welcome in the summer. Signing a strong centre-back is one of their priorities for the upcoming transfer window.

Standing at 6’6″, Vestergaard has the kind of presence they require. It remains to be seen if they will be making further checks, or if their interest could lead to an offer.

Furthermore, there is no mention of a potential asking price from Leicester, who spent just over £15m to take him last year.
