Senior police officer suspended from duty is being investigated for alleged sexual misconduct

A senior officer with Greater Manchester Police that has been suspended from duty is being investigated for alleged sexual misconduct, it has now been confirmed.

The Manchester Evening News understands that the alleged misconduct happened during a training course. It was reported earlier this month that the Superintendent, who has not been named, had been suspended after the internal allegation was made.

The investigation was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), for the watchdog to carry out an initial assessment to determine whether an independent investigation was required.

The IOPC told the Manchester Evening News in a statement that they referred the investigation to Greater Manchester Police and have made recommendations of matters for the investigating officer to consider.

An IOPC spokesperson said: “We have carefully assessed a referral from Greater Manchester Police regarding allegations of inappropriate conduct by an officer of Superintendent rank.

“We have informed GMP the nature of the allegations mean an investigation is required. We determined GMP should carry out the investigation and have made recommendations of matters for the investigating officer to consider.”

In an update on Wednesday (July 19), Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the an internal allegation of sexual misconduct had been made against the senior officer and that they currently remain suspended from duty.

Following an assessment from the IOPC, GMP's Professional Standards Branch is now leading the investigation.
