Second boy arrested after 13-year-old stabbed in park as police increase stop and search powers

A second teenager has been arrested following a stabbing in a park, as police step up stop and search powers.

A 13-year-old boy was rushed to hospital following the incident in Seymour Park, Old Traffford, yesterday afternoon (Saturday June 18). A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of assault and Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that another boy, 13, has since been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Officers will be authorised to use Section 60 stop and search powers in Seymour Park today, as well as nearby streets such as Ayres Road, Humphrey Road, Northumberland Road, and Seymour Grove. Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act allows officers to stop and search anyone in the area, even without suspicion.

Chief Inspector Shoheb Chowdhury, of GMP’s Trafford district, said: “We absolutely understand the impact events, like that of yesterday, can have on our communities and simply won’t tolerate it. This police force is committed to fighting, preventing and reducing crime whilst keeping people safe and that is our rationale for authorising today’s Section 60.

“Members of the public can expect to see extra officers in the area and there is a possibility that they themselves could be stopped searched. We thank them in advance for their cooperation.”
