Scott McTominay crosses Scotland England divide as Harry Maguire offered solace after heavy Hampden backlash

Scott McTominay has shared his support for England scapegoat Harry Maguire after his Hampden blunder and that the heavy fire that has followed.

Maguire has been in the firing line for some time, more prominently since his move to Manchester United, though that has accelerated over the past 12 months with Erik ten Hag's preference to start Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez at the heart of the Red Devils' defence. An own goal against Sevilla in last season's Europa League saw Maguire questioned even more over his form, though England boss Gareth Southgate stood by him.

Against Steve Clarke's men on Tuesday at Hampden, the defender, who had only played 29 minutes of club football all season, turned the ball into his own net for the Auld Enemy, which gave Scotland a strong yet brief way back into the game. Pundits and fans have criticised the defender heavily, with Southgate publicly backing the centre-half player and Maguire's own mother firing back at the abuse.

And now Scotland international McTominay has offered some respite to his team mate, posting a photo on Instagram of the pair to show his solidarity. Of course, the duo have shared four years on the Old Trafford turf with one another, and Maguire has been at the club for a large part of McTominay's developmental success.

The duo were both strongly linked with a move to West Ham in the summer, though they both remain at Old Trafford despite David Moyes' advances. Maguire admitted he didn't care about the abuse he received in Scotland - instead saying it helped England out by taking pressure off the other players.
