Scotland get Euro 2024 reality check but Lawrence Shankland rescue mission shakes Georgia hoodoo – 3 talking points

Super sub Lawrence Shankland rescued a point for lacklustre Scotland as they shook off their Georgia hoodoo to end a winless streak for Steve Clarke's side.

Scotland arrived in Tbilisi with a dreadful record in European qualification against the the hosts - having played two and lost two in Euro qualifiers in 2007 and 2015 that saw the Georgians leave our boys' qualification dreams in tatters. Steve Clarke didn't have the same concerns as his predecessors having booked a spot in Germany with two games to spare, but it was a familiar feeling early on for the Tartan Army after Kvaratskhelia did his best to dampen the qualification party.

Giorgi Chakvetadze's looping ball forward beat Greg Taylor to allow Otar Kakabadze to fire a low ball across the six-yard box. The Napoli star was quick off his mark to beat Ryan Porteous to the ball and beat Zander Clark at his near post to give the hosts a surprise lead early in the contest.

But after a meek first half showing, Scott McTominay came to his country's aid in their hour of need once again. The ball fell to the Manchester United midfielder on the edge of the box, and his low-drive wrong-footed Giorgi Mamardashvili and found the bottom corner.

McTominay ticked off one hoodoo for Scotland as he became the first Scotland player to find the net in the Georgian capital, but things quickly went wrong again when Kvaratskhelia found the net. The playmaker cut in from the right flank and his low drive flew under Hearts goalkeeper Clark and into the bottom corner.

But substitute Shankland was on hand in stoppage time to save his Jambo pal's blushes with a late bullet header. The striker, who was not included in the original squad and only earned a call-up after Che Adams' injury
