Scarlets 32-30 Clermont Auvergne: Sam Costelow's late conversion seals semi-final in dramatic Challenge Cup clash

Sam Costelow's late conversion sent the Scarlets into the Challenge Cup semi-finals in a breathless quarter-final win over Clermont in Llanelli.

Trailing 30-25 heading into the final few minutes, wing Ryan Conbeer crossed out wide for a try that drew the west Walians level - setting up fly-half Costelow to slot over a pressure-filled conversion from out wide that put Dwayne Peel's side into the last four of Europe.

Tries from Leigh Halfpenny, Costelow and Johnny Williams had set the Scarlets up for victory in the first-half, before the 14-men of Clermont, who saw centre Irea Simone sent off, turned the screw after the break to stand on the verge the semi-finals before Conbeer's late intervention.

The opening minutes saw Anthony Belleau and Halfpenny trade penalties, before the Wales full-back crossed for the opening score.

Handed a counter-attacking opportunity from a lost Clermont lineout, Halfpenny reached Steff Evans' chip ahead first - just about getting his fingertips to the ball for the first try on nine minutes.

The home side extended their lead shortly after as Evans' boot again proved useful. A loose pass from Clermont scrum-half Baptiste Jauneau allowed Costelow to hack the ball forward as the Scarlets defence immediately turned to attack.

In-form wing Evans was next to the ball, nursing it further forward with a toe, allowing Costelow to regather and cross.

Down two scores, Clermont managed to find their feet a little more in attack. A chip over the top from Damian Penaud evaded the dangerous French wing, but centre Simone was on hand to pick up the loose ball and dive over midway through the first-half.

Minutes later though, Simone would quickly shift from hero to villain. A high shot on Halfpenny left the full-back
