Sarah Healy impresses in Rome, Ireland book World U20 final spot

UCD AC's Sarah Healy produced a strong run to finish eighth in the women’s 1500m at the latest Diamond League meeting in Rome.

Healy clocked a time of 3:58.42 at the Stadio Olimpico as Faith Kipyegon kept up her good form having claimed gold in the same event at the Olympic Games in Paris.

The 30-year-old Kenyan came home in 3:52.89, with Ethiopian pair Freweyni Hailu and Brike Haylom finishing second and third.

Healy’s time was less than a second outside the PB she set back in July.

Tyrone’s Nick Griggs was also in action in the men’s 5000m, but did not finish as Ethiopia's Hagos Gebrhiwet won in a time of 12:51.07.

Meanwhile, at the World Under-20 Championships in Lima, Ireland’s men’s 4x400m relay team broke the national record to book their place in Sunday morning’s final.

The team of Conor Kelly, Adam Courtney, Sean Doggett and Stephen Mannion were third in their heat and progressed as the fifth fastest qualifiers in a time of 3:08.94. The previous Irish U20 record was 3.10.17.

It's already been a memorable meet in Peru as Oisín Joyce won Ireland's first ever throwing medal at the Worlds after clinching bronze in the men's javelin.

The 19-year-old Mayo native extended his own national U20 record to 73.89m on route to the landmark finish on Thursday night.
