As more than 80,000 people flooded Blackpool Promenade for one of the most iconic traditions in the north, a former Pussycat Doll had the measure of the seaside resort.

Tonight (August 30), marked the annual switch-on of Blackpool Illuminations, featuring some huge names in music including Ella Henderson, Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt, and Scary Spice herself, Mel B.

Blackpool Tower fell dark and a Spice Girl stepped up to the plate. Mel B was ready and waiting to do the honours – but not before explaining a touching memory of Blackpool.

Leeds-born Mel told the cheering crowd that her “first proper job” was at the Pleasure Beach. And, just like many northern families, she used to come to the illuminations every year with her mum and sister.

Sydnie shared that just four months ago she was working in a gym and that if you’ve got a dream, keep working towards it. Her first song was a poignant performance of Tomorrow from the musical Annie!

Former member of the Pussycat Dolls, Kimberly Wyatt, also performed a DJ set before the switch-on. Although the American had to do some prior research on the illuminations themselves, she was no stranger to Blackpool.

“I have been to Blackpool a couple of times, mainly for dance competitions.
