Sam Lammers quotes Ruud van Nistelrooy's 'Tomato Ketchup' theory as Rangers flop breaks Utrecht duck

Sam Lammers insists he will copy his mentor Ruud van Nistelrooy's novel 'Tomato Ketchup' approach to scoring goals after the on loan Rangers flop opened his account for FC Utrecht.

Lammers joined homeland club Utrecht after a disappointing six months at Ibrox and he netted in their 4-0 win over Fortuna Sittard to help them equal a club record run of 13 unbeaten games in a row. It was his first goal since November 1 when he netted for Rangers in a 5-0 romp at Dundee.

Lammers was coached by van Nistelrooy at PSV Eindhoven as a kid, who once famously compared scoring goals to a bottle of Tomato Ketchup. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star said: "Scoring goals is like holding a bottle of ketchup upside down. Sometimes you have to hold the bottle upside down for an eternity and nothing comes out, sometimes there's no stopping it." And Lammers backed his unusual theory. He said: "I was coached as a youngster by Ruud van Nistelrooy and I once spoke to him about his tomato ketchup theory.

"So hopefully, the bottle is now open for me! Of course, I was really looking for my first goal. But the assist I gave to Taylor Booth to make it 1-0 for us was more important than my goal.

"Scoring was the icing on the cake. Since I came here from Rangers, I have tried to give everything to make sure we win. There is a lot of passion in this team.

"We have been undefeated since I arrived and for a while before that. We scored four goals for the second game in a row and were very effective. This was a great day for me and the team."
