Sainsbury’s shoppers fuming after tech problems affects Bank Holiday shop

Sainsbury’s online shoppers have been left furious after a late-night technical problem saw customers unable to amend their orders before the 11pm deadline. It resulted in a number of shoppers set to receive partial food shops for the Bank Holiday weekend.

The website went down at around 9pm last night, where a message displayed on the screen advising customers that ‘essential maintenance’ was taking place.

But panicked shoppers took to Twitter to share their stress at being unable to checkout after opting to order online to avoid the stores over the Jubilee weekend.

The message on the site read: “We’ll be back soon. We’re really sorry, but we can’t bring you the groceries site at the moment. We’re carrying out some essential maintenance and we’ll be back soon so please try again later.”

Pennyblogs tweeted the supermarket giant and said: “Can’t get through on the phone to anyone. No idea if my order is picked or if I’ve now got to drag a three year old round the store to be ready for a 1pm street party. Understand technology can fail but that’s when customer service should step in. Instead I’m getting silence.”

This morning, Deonne Hill added: “@sainsburys will we be receiving a gesture of goodwill after last night’s fiasco? A trip out to the supermarket with two kids in tow this morning was not part of our plans for bank holiday, unbelievable that we couldn’t rely on a large supermarket to get things right.”

Many shoppers add a handful of items to their online basket in order to reserve a delivery slot in advance, but being unable to amend their order meant some shoppers are to expect ‘half a shop’. One customer had only placed one
