'Sadistic' knifeman, gunman and a US drugs mule among those jailed in Greater Manchester this week

A ‘sadistic’ knifeman who stabbed a stranger as he walked home from work is among those jailed in Greater Manchester this week.

Prison terms are handed out to the most serious offenders. Manchester Evening News reporters are on hand to cover such cases.

Whelan, 32, and his younger brother Alex Whelan, 26, had gone on trial charged with attempted murder. They were both cleared of the offence, though Daniel Whelan accepted firing the semi-automatic gun. On Friday, January 19, he was jailed at Manchester Crown Court for 12 years.
