SA referee Victor Gomes nominated for prestigious World's Best Referee award

Fresh from officiating at the recently concluded FIFA World Cup in Qatar, renowned South African referee Victor Gomes has been nominated for a prestigious refereeing award.

Gomes, alongside 24 referees from around the world, has been listed for the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) Men's World Best Referee award.

The winner will succeed the 2021 winner Felix Brych from Germany.

Gomes, 40, recently announced his retirement from officiating professional football after representing South Africa in Qatar.

He took charge of two group-stage matches, including France's 4-1 win over Australia and was under the spotlight as Spain suffered a controversial 2-1 defeat to Japan. Gomes was also the fourth official in the quarter-final match between Argentina and the Netherlands.

Earlier this year, Gomes also took charge of the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Egypt.

At the same time, the recent DStv Premiership Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium turned out to be his final game at club level.
