SA football fraternity mourns death of Kaizer Chiefs young gun: 'Another talent gone so soon'

Tributes have poured in from the South African football fraternity following the death of Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs.

Fleurs, 24, was killed during a hijacking in Honeydew, Johannesburg, on Wednesday night.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said Fleurs had stopped at a petrol station on the corner of 14th Avenue and Hendrik Potgieter Drive in his red VW Golf 8 GTI.

"While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who [were] driving a white BMW 1 series."

The men held Fleurs at gunpoint, ordered him to get out of the vehicle and shot him in his upper body. One of the men left in Fleurs' car and the other one followed in the BMW.

Kaizer Chiefs confirmed Fleurs' death in a statement: "It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs, tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course.

"May his dear soul rest in peace."
