It was just as well my Braehead brawl with Kelvin Wilson went viral at the weekend because it spared me having to explain to my missus where all the carpet burns came from!

My Hearts side may have had the rug pulled out from under us at the Scottish Masters Cup but I loved every minute of being back in action in front of a crowd like that. It was supposed to be a bit of fun but I’ll admit, as soon as I arrived at the venue those old competitive juices were quickly flowing. I’d driven up to Glasgow with every intention of just having a good time with some ex-teammates and former opponents.

But the minute I took to the pitch, that in-build will to win that we all had during our playing days soon kicked back in. The surface as we all saw wasn’t ideal with the carpet constantly splitting apart. But in all honesty, if there were going to be any injuries caused it wasn’t because of the troublesome blue pile we were having to negotiate.

It was us old idiots you had to worry about. We’re not as young as we once were and most of us are certainly a lot heavier yet there we were all charging about thinking we were 20 again.

You had Alan Hutton running head first into the side boards, Mo Ross pulling a hammy while trying to lay one on big Marvin Bartley and me ending up in a wrestling match with former Celtic defender Kelvin.

He’s a big lad so God knows what I thought I was doing. I just remember him taking the ball off me and thinking, “I’m just going to hold on to him!” He kept trying to charge off but I was like, “If I’m going down, he’s coming down with me!”

And by the point I’d hit the deck, I thought, “I can’t let go of him now!” It might not have seemed like it but it was all just a good bit of fun.
