Ryan Giggs' case back in court as trial date looms

Ryan Giggs' case was back in court on Friday morning as his trial date looms. The former Manchester United midfielder did not appear at court for today's pre-trial review at Manchester Crown Court.

Mr Giggs, who recently announced he was stepping down from his position as Wales manager, has previously entered not guilty pleas to controlling behaviour of his ex-partner Kate Greville, assault occasioning actual bodily harm of Ms Greville, and assault by beating of her sister Emma Greville. The hearing lasted for about 30 minutes and involved discussion of pre-trial administrative matters.

His trial, which is scheduled to last for two weeks, is due to begin on August 8. The prosecution was represented by Peter Wright QC, and Mr Giggs by Marianne Alton at this morning's hearing.

Mr Giggs, of Chatsworth Road, Worsley, Salford, has previously been granted conditional bail and was not required to attend the latest hearing. Adjourning the case, Judge Hilary Manley said: "I have made the directions that I have, the trial is listed for August 8.

"The defendant's attendance was excused today, but he is obviously aware of the trial date."
