Ruud van Nistelrooy gives verdict on Manchester United-linked defender

Ruud van Nistelrooy labelled Jarrad Branthwaite a 'great talent' amid links with Manchester United.

While a backup goalkeeper and defensive midfielder are bigger priorities, a new defender could also be on the agenda given Harry Maguire's future remains uncertain. It seems likely that veteran centre-back Jonny Evans is the more likely candidate to add reinforcements in the heart of defence but United have been linked with starlet Branthwaite.

The Everton prospect was in the squad for England's Under-21 European Championship win and though first-team opportunities have been limited at Goodison Park, he impressed on loan at PSV Eindhoven last season. The towering defender played 36 games, contributing four goals and two assists, and made such an impression that the Dutch side are keen to sign him permanently.

However, they may face competition from United who have now been credited with an interest in Branthwaite. The Daily Mail claims Branthwaite's name is being discussed by senior United figures as a move for a centre-back continues to be considered.
